We have launched a new Northern Regeneration Map as part of the Renew inquiry into housing-led regeneration, supported by Homes for the North and Muse. It showcases how housing-led regeneration can drive growth in every postcode, increase housing supply and create thriving places across the North.

The map tracks progress with major regeneration projects and is designed to help NHC members deliver housing-led regeneration well, and policymakers to understand the situation on the ground. It brings together a growing library of housing-led regeneration case studies identified through the Renew inquiry, highlighting good practice, lessons learned, delivery challenges and the North’s current and future priorities for regeneration.

Our Chief Executive Tracy Harrison said: “Across the North, our members are planning and delivering ambitious regeneration projects to create better homes, stronger communities and new opportunities for residents. Over the summer, I took part in a series of visits to northern regeneration projects. The map is about bottling the learning from the tours, including what works well and what current barriers are, and turning those learnings into a useful resource for members and policymakers alike.

“It shows what can be achieved through regeneration and the huge opportunity to do more. The right support from the Government – including devolved, place-based funding for housing-led regeneration and investment in skills and capacity through a National Centre for Regeneration – could unlock 500,000 good-quality homes in the North. This would help create thriving communities and drive growth in every postcode.”

The map was created using case studies submitted through the Renew Call for Evidence. We received submissions from organisations responsible for 1 million of the North’s social homes. The resource contains a mix of completed sites, sites in progress and planned sites in all areas of the North. It includes examples of estate regeneration, brownfield regeneration and town and city centre regeneration. The Northern Regeneration Map is a live resource, so new sites will be added, and sites already listed will be updated. If you would like a project you are working on to be featured  email Senior Engagement Manager (Devolution and Place Lead) Liam Gregson.

This new online tool launched at the NHC’s Northern Housing Summit in Leeds. The event featured discussion of key issues including regeneration, development, AI, housing quality, skills and stronger communities. The summit was chaired by writer and broadcaster, Sonia Sodha, and speakers included Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin; Chair of the Renew Westminster Group, Andrew Cooper MP; Chief Executive of the Regulator of Social Housing, Jonathan Walters; former No10 advisors Toby Lloyd and Dan Corry, and senior government officials.
