The Social Housing Tenants’ Climate Jury
2024 marks a big birthday for the NHC – we’ve been the voice of housing in the North for 50 years!
Over the course of the year, we’ll be reflecting on some of the work we’ve undertaken over the last 50 years as part of our ’50 Stories’ celebration – looking at what we’ve achieved and looking forward to the next 50 years. Reminiscing about previous projects can also prompt us to consider the future of housing over the next 50 years.
In particular, the award-winning Social Housing Tenants’ Climate Jury provides us with a set of recommendations that could help shape the future of housing.
The Jury saw 30 social housing tenants from across the North of England come together to discuss how climate change impacts their lives. Over 30 hours and ten weeks, the Jury produced recommendations on how tenants, social housing providers, and others can work together to tackle climate change in our homes and neighbourhoods.
The ‘first-of-its-kind’ Jury won Best Resident Involvement Initiative at the 2022 Northern Housing Awards, being recognised for its work in helping housing providers along their journey to net-zero.
Watch the below video to hear the tenants involved in the jurors explain why it was important for them to get involved in the project.
The Social Housing Tenants’ Climate Jury was commissioned by the Northern Housing Consortium in partnership with five housing associations: First Choice Homes Oldham, Karbon Homes, Salix Homes, Thirteen Group, and Yorkshire Housing.
