Better Health at Work – Gold award winners
We’ve achieved a Gold Better Health at Work award, recognising our commitment to promoting health and wellbeing to colleagues and the wider community.
Better Health at Work recognises the efforts of employers in addressing health issues at work, with a range of accreditations available, starting with a Bronze award.
We’ve had a staff-led wellbeing group in place for many years and have built on this to create a culture that values health and wellbeing across every level in the organisation.
All our wellbeing programmes are based on what staff tell us is important to them and in last year, we’ve developed and taken part in several campaigns around the following topics:
- Nutrition – including expert-led workshops on sugar consumption, recipe swaps, and even a staff calendar featuring our recipes
- Financial wellbeing – we explored budgeting, savings, and heard from the Money and Pensions Service on credit, debt and pensions. All staff were given time during their working day to manage their own finances and put what they had learnt into action
- Mental health – topics included the importance of sleep, physical movement, and training for managers on neuro-diversity awareness
- Physical wellbeing – we took part in walking challenges, paddle boarding, hiked up Gowbarrow Fell, and harnessed the power of nature in our sunflower-growing contest
- Men’s and women’s health – staff were given information on NHS health screening for men and women and offered the opportunity of an onsite health check.
Throughout the year, staff also benefitted from:
- Our employee assistance programme.
- Mental health first aiders.
- Our new wellbeing portal, which gives access to discounts on gym membership, information on health services, and access to 24-hour mental health support.

The NHC achieved the Bronze Better Health at Work award in 2022, the Silver award in 2023, and will be presented with the Gold award at a ceremony this spring.
The Better Health at Work assessors said: “Feedback from employees shines through to show the benefits many have found from taking part in health initiatives. It is clear to see how well embedded their new practices have become.”
We are now working towards the Continuing Excellence award. Watch this space for updates!
