As part of the Housing and Planning Act, Fixed Term Tenancies are due to come into effect in Autumn 2017. Councils will introduce tenancies for most new council tenants for a period of two to ten years, rather than granting a lifetime tenancy with extensions for those with a disability or with children. It is possible that similar measures will be introduced for housing associations via changes to regulations.
The Housing Minister, Gavin Barwell, has said “fixed-term tenancies will better enable councils to give priority to people with the greatest housing need.”
The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has set up a working group of 20 councils to help develop regulations and guidance on fixed-term tenancies. The introduction of this policy will mean significant changes for NHC members, therefore the NHC would like to invite members to a FREE roundtable to:
- Hear the latest from the DCLG Fixed Term Policy team.
- Discuss the opportunities and challenges of the policy.
- Hear of the different approaches adopted across the North.
- Discuss implementation of the policy.
- Examine the risks associated and what organisations need to consider.
Share good practice and network.
